"Were you alive last night, Arabella?" asked Alys.
Second and possibly last in Macdonald's Alys series, a little-remembered chapter book of episodic adventures following ALYS-ALL-ALONE (1911) and foregrounding the imaginative adventures of a young girl: with her dolls and pets, invested with anthropomorphic and magical qualities; and with her family and friends, who benefit morally by her innocent good influence. A charming work, a contemporary of both POLLYANNA and the later Oz books, with a free whimsy always lightly tethered to the real world of US American childhood. Not an overt Carroll homage, despite the allusive title. OCLC locates just five holdings.
Boston: L.C. Page & Company, 1913. 7.5'' x 5.5''. Original tan pictorial cloth. Illustrated with six black and white plates, including frontispiece, by Diantha Horne Marlowe. Publisher's ads at rear. 334, [8] pages. Moderate soil to boards. Occasional touches of soil throughout. Front hinge starting.
