Founded in 1914, THE LITTLE REVIEW swiftly gained attention for its experimental approach to art, literature, and politics alike. Soon to be defamed as "a decadent art magazine that delights in publishing the filth of contemporary writers" upon its publication of excerpts from ULYSSES in the following year, Anderson was already championing Joyce in this issue with a special offer of A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN as gift-with-purchase for new subscribers: "Or you may have Mr. Joyce's DUBLINERS instead."
Also included in this issue are the translated poems of Li Po; Lady Gregory's "Hanrahan's Oath"; one of Pound's Imaginary Letters; and a furious explanation of the October issue's suppression by the Post Office, which objected to a short story by Wyndham Lewis on grounds of "OBSCENITY!"
