[ARCHIVE OF TYPESCRIPTS RECOUNTING A TRIP TO EUROPE]
This, his detailed and extensive account of a 1929 European trip with his wife, finds Berkey - in addition to typical tourist travels - visiting Mount Vesuvius during a particularly active period, as well as visiting the battlesites of France where his son had fought as an army officer in World War I. Photographs include: cathedrals, the Coliseum, St. Peter's, monuments, chateaus and battlefield sites. Attractively-made, these typescripts reflect a seriousness in the writing. The letter, A DAY ON THE BATTLEFIELDS IN FRANCE, written to be read by family, contains pages marked for the inclusion of photographs and is concluded by an explanatory note indicating that Berkey intended for this writing to be published. A carefully-assembled and well-written photographic travelogue penned by an important American scientist.
