First edition, published soon after the Spanish-American War and at the beginning of the Philippine-American War, these stories describe children taking on roles in famous historical battles.
Very good minus.
GALLANT LITTLE PATRIOTS
"Back of Teddy's house was a little rise of ground that they had picked out as 'San Juan Hill,' and now that they were uniformed they were going to make the famous charge."
A militaristic little book, reflecting the imperial mindset of dominant American culture at the turn of the century. Featuring references to relatively recent military history such as Commodore Dewey's victory over the Spanish at Manila and Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders, as well as red cross nurses, Hobson on the Merrimac, the naval reserve, and even a hero returning home from war. Some of the illustrations from the Humphreys' thematically similar LITTLE SOLDIERS AND SAILORS are reused in this title.
