Nicols provides a remarkable essay exploring why a couple would remove themselves so completely from society: "Forty years of solitude...of winter storms and late springs and hungry mosquitos...of canned sardines...of reading to each other." Indeed, for book lovers a particularly engrossing portrait of bibliophilia, with numerous images of the couples' books and library. This catalog was to lead to a two-page article in the New York Times on Feb. 13th 2003, which itself led to the sale of all available copies of this remarkable collection. It remains scarce to this day. A 2007 reprint of this book by Boxed Books, includes all the same images, but substitutes Fox's essay with the NYT article.
Philadelphia: Pond Press, 2002. Paperback. Square 8vo. Pictorial wraps. Near fine with touches of wear and some faint sunning to spine. Else tight, and sharp.
