First edition of this charming adventure story of a young boy among grizzly bears, featuring a particularly excellent front cover illustration of a gunboat.
Very good plus.
FRANK IN THE WOODS
"Look there, boys! Now, see me make that varmint jump."
Part of the "Gun Boat Series" by Castlemon, one of six titles recounting the adventures of Frank and his companions across the forests of the US and Canada. Reflecting the white media tastes of the mid-18th century, some of the main antagonists of this story are caricatured Native Americans, presented as one of the many dangers of the wilderness. An interesting snapshot of cultural narratives in children's literature, justifying the ongoing expansion of white people across North America.
Philadelphia/Cincinatti: Porter & Coates/R.W. Carroll, [1865?]. 6.75'' x 4.5''. Original maroon cloth pictorial boards. Black-and-white pictorial series page with ornamental initials throughout. 256 pages. Bookplate to front pastedown "Private Library of Lyman L. Pierce."Owner's signature to front flyleaf "Property of L.L. Pierce / Stockton / N.Y. / April, 1883." Boards with some scuffing and edgewear, corners and spine ends bumped. Spine cracked to a few openings, leaves with a few small spots of soil. Sound and bright overall.
