Thornton Wilder earned the 1928 Pulitzer Prize for his story of five people who plunge to their deaths in a bridge collapse in Peru, the narrative pieced together by a monk trying to make sense of the tragedy he witnessed. The first British edition of THE BRIDGE OF SAN LUIS REY came out a few days before the first American edition, but Drevenstedt's evocative art deco illustrations appear only in the US first. THE BRIDGE OF SAN LUIS REY has been made into three films, the first in 1929, then in 1944, and most recently in 2004. Its multiple adaptations are a testament to its timelessness.
