"Within a week the world was over. It came as a surprise to some of the older-fashioned people."
T. H. White uses the science fiction genre to "underline the points [he] wished to make about contemporary civilization through the conversations and fox-hunting manias of a large cast," in much the same way he used the fantasy of THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING to communicate his pacifist ideals (Clute and Nicholls). In his characteristic way, White manages to find both sentiment and satire in the post-apocalyptic setting. An attractive example of White's SF side.
