SEMI-TOUGH combines insider knowledge of pro football with a very '70s style of three-roommate romantic comedy, as well as a generous portion of self-satire as the narrator, a Texan halfback trapped in a book deal, attempts to fulfill his sporting ambitions and his publishing commitments. The fourth book and first novel by Jenkins, SEMI-TOUGH is also the basis for a successful 1977 film adaptation starring Burt Reynolds and Kris Kristofferson, with a curiously cast Lotte Lenya in a minor role. It "wasn't a horrible movie," in Jenkins's own opinion.
