"I like the crowd I'm with, here in Venice, all of them: Sylvia Miles, Joe Dallesandro, Paul Morrissey, little Andy Warhol so much like a lost little boy, lost ing time."
A warm and frank recounting of his formative years and successes, Williams's MEMOIRS was clearly meant to ride the momentum of the playwright's reputation, but is much better than it needs to be. Williams shares his feelings about high points ("After the success of MENAGERIE [...] I felt a great depression, probably because I never believed that anything would continue, would hold"), introduces colorful cameos of friends like Leonard Bernstein, and talks candidly about his experiences with gay lovers. Required reading for any Williams devotee, here in a deluxe collectible form.
