Written in the form of a letter from father to son, GILEAD recounts the struggles of the Ames family to reconcile their Christian faith with their methods of opposition to the institution of slavery. Former US president Barack Obama counts it as one of his favorite novels; he notes that the "gracious and courtly and a little bit confused" narrator Reverend John Ames is "one of [his] favorite characters in fiction" (NEW YORK REVIEW).
