"Every man's hand against me and even my own relatives betraying me! What have I done – what have I done to deserve it?"
A tale of capitalistic corruption in the tradition of literary realism and informed by ideas of the growing communist movement in China, MIDNIGHT represented a new kind of novel that the political left hoped to create alongside red China. Originally published in Chinese in 1933, this English-language edition of MIDNIGHT was produced by the publishing arm of the Chinese Communist Party in Peking in the midst of the Cold War. The Mao Dun Literature Prize, named after the author, is one of the most prestigious literary awards in China.
