"Je n'ai jamais changé." (Eluard)
Beautiful reprint edition of this 11-year collaboration between poet, artist, and original publisher Gérald Cramer, whose "combined efforts and perseverance rendered the creation of one of the great monuments of twentieth century art" (publisher's preface). With a new introduction by Anne Hyde Greet, adapted from her 1983 essay in Bulletin de Bibliophile: "Miró's attentiveness to words, his use of them as springboards or launching pads into his own world of mysterious shapes and colors, had to do with what he called 'tension d'esprit': 'What I need is a mental tightening or stretching...An atmosphere favorable to that tightening I find in poetry, music, architecture...in my daily walks, in certain sounds.'"
First edition thus. New York: George Braziller, Inc, 1984. 13'' x 10.25''. Original portfolio wrappers, laid into original stiff chemise along with original 22-page introduction in grey printed wrappers. Lacking original slipcase. Illustrated with color woodcuts by Miró. Minor blemish to lower corner of portfolio front cover. Boards housed in protective cardboard enclosure, within white printed slipcase. Light edgewear to outermost slipcase.
