James Jones drew on his own experiences as an infantryman to set the stage for FROM HERE TO ETERNITY; his portrayal of the interplay and clash of personalities at a Hawaiian barracks earned him the 1952 National Book Award.
The film adaptation of FROM HERE TO ETERNITY features several changed narrative elements to appease the Production Code Office and the US Army, including the removal of references to homosexuality and venereal disease. In return, the Army allowed the production to film on-location and to use aircraft. With a cast including Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, and Frank Sinatra, it was nominated for 12 Academy Awards including Best Picture, which it won.
