For reasons best known to themselves, the US paperback publishing houses which frantically dredged up and reprinted any proto-gothic, semi-gothic, quasi-gothic, and not a few Not Gothic classics throughout the '60s and early '70s neglected to refurbish and re-issue Radcliffe (or Lewis) in the same style. Bram Stoker, yes; Lady Caroline Lamb, yes; Ann Radcliffe, no. For an excellent modern Udolpho that looks well on the bookshelf and better in the hand, one must go to France, which did and does very well by English authors in translation. Stylish, striking, and quite unlike the pulp covers familiar to an Anglophone readership.
