"You felt as though some exact, skillful contact had been made between the surfaces of your hearts to make you aware, in some pattern, of his joy and his despair. You could feel the fullness and the emptiness of this stranger's life." ("The Key")
A beautiful copy of this lovingly produced signed special edition, including all of Welty's (then) published stories since 1941, as well as two that had not yet appeared in print; the later paperback edition would win a National Book Award. With her 1980 introduction offering some notes on the history of their composition and her experiences with editors and readers Robert Penn Warren, Katherine Anne Porter, and William Maxwell. "I have been told," she writes, "both in approval and in accusation, that I seem to love all my characters. What I do in writing of any character is to try to enter into the mind, heart, and skin of a human being who is not myself."
