"I had three cents to spend – / I ran to DAY's with glee, / To get a picture book; / And here I've got it – see!"
Mahlon Day was a prolific and successful 19th-century chapbook publisher, as evidenced by the long list of other "School Books, &c" he advertises for sale on the rear wrapper of this copy of SELECT RHYMES FOR THE NURSERY. Many of his publications feature short rhymes encouraging children to spend their own money on his books, rather than leaving the selection of reading material up to their parents. Perhaps Miss Julia Ann Young, who owned this copy, did just that.
New-York: Mahlon Day, [circa 1834]. 4.25'' x 2.75''. Original pictorial uncolored wrappers. Pictorial title page with ten woodcuts. 18 pages, with ads to rear wrapper. Contemporary owner's name to front wrapper, "Miss Julia Ann Young's book." Contemporary partially-erased pencil marks to inner wrappers. Contemporary vernacular sewn repairs to spine. Wrappers with with some edgewear, a bit of toning; tiny hole to front wrapper. Leaves with light scattered soiling.
