First US edition of this collection of short moral stories from English polymath John Bowring.
"In the minds of the best men there is, always has been, and always, perhaps, will be, much difference of opinion as to what is true, but everybody knows and feels what is kind."
John Bowring was a politician, a linguist, an economist, and a prolific author on a variety of topics. THE YOUTH'S BOOK OF TALES AND SKETCHES is a US abridgment of Bowring's 1834 MINOR MORALS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE, with "a few lines... omitted which might have offended the prejudices of some of our countrymen" (advertisement). This first US edition is quite scarce – OCLC locates only two holdings.
