First published in a limited run of 500, THE TAILOR OF GLOUCESTER is, rather surprisingly, based on a true story – although the original saviors of the troubled tailor were his human assistants. THE TAILOR OF GLOUCESTER was Potter's second title published by Frederick Warne and Co., and was successful with children as well as tailors: a review in THE TAILOR AND CUTTER periodical was "enthusiastic," and increased "sales of the book among responsive tailors" (Lane, 105). Potter wrote in 1916 "this is my own favorite amongst my little books," and the love and care that she put into this charming story is evident (Linder, 121).
