THE TALE OF MRS. TIGGY-WINKLE
"Why! MRS. TIGGY-WINKLE was nothing but a HEDGEHOG!"
Like many of Beatrix Potter's animal characters, MRS. TIGGY-WINKLE is based on one of her pets: in this case, a hedgehog of the name (you guessed it) Tiggy-Winkle. In lieu of trying to wrangle Tiggy-Winkle into hedgehog-sized clothes, Potter used a "cottonwool dummy figure," but noted that the stand-in "terrified [her] rabbit" (Linder, 156). The sweet spiny laundry woman of who emerged from these models is beloved as "one of the most positive of [Potter's] creations," and her cozy countryside surroundings – beautifully executed – transport the reader into the story (Taylor et al., 121).
