Intended to be affordable and accessible the Cheap Repository Tracts series was funded by reformers like abolitionist William Wilberforce and executed under the direction of Hannah More, who wrote more than half of them. (Those authored by More are all signed "Z," as here.) The Cheap Repository Tracts used the format of the popular but "vulgar and indecent penny books" (Weiss 539), suborning it in the name of morality and education — a strategy Hannah More practiced across her literary productions, from SACRED DRAMAS (Biblical scenes adapted into popular plays) to COELEBS IN SEARCH OF A WIFE (her wildly successful conduct book in the form of a romance novel). The Cheap Repository series sold in the millions, reaching an astounding level of circulation in the late 18th century. This issue was part of a series produced in the United States by B. & J. Johnson, extending More's great influence over ideal working-class moral principles across the Atlantic.
