EDVARD MUNCH: Master Prints from the Epstein Family Collection
"I want to make certain the Munch graphics are preserved as a teaching collection and a gift to the nation."
Unique association copy of this catalogue of Munch prints, collected and introduced by Sarah G. Epstein and with an inscription linking the collector to the Mellon and Scaife families of extreme wealth and philanthropic Pittsburgh fame. In addition to her art collecting and support for the National Gallery, Epstein was an active board member and volunteer with Planned Parenthood of Western Washington, as well as serving on the boards of the Population Institute, Population Services International, and the far-right Federation of Americans for Immigration Reform (itself heavily funded by Cordelia Scaife May, sister of Richard Mellon Scaife and aunt of David Scaife, whose wedding the inscription fondly recalls).
The catalogue includes a lengthy autobiographical essay by Epstein, "Living with Edvard Munch Images: A Collector in Three Stages," and a foreword by J. Carter Brown, director of the National Gallery, to whom this collection was ultimately donated.
