"Say! That makes a story that NO ONE can beat, / When I say that I saw it on Mulberry Street."
AND TO THINK THAT I SAW IT ON MULBERRY STREET was the first children's book in what would become a legendary career. "Here Seuss begins techniques which he uses" in almost all of his future works, observes Thomas Fensch: "the rhyme gallops [...] every page – text and pictures – contributes to a bigger – and better – next page" (68). Marco's imagined parade contains a few racially-stereotyped groups and individuals, which recently prompted Dr. Seuss Enterprises to let the title go out of print. Nevertheless, an auspicious debut.
