BUFFALO BILL
From mythology to history to fantasy and everything in between, the works of husband and wife team Edgar Parin and Ingri d'Aulaire have long been indelible parts of the children's literature pantheon. Their use of stone lithography for their illustrations gave their books an "uncanny hand-drawn vibrancy" that makes them a treat to look at (NEW YORK REVIEW BOOKS). The d'Aulaires earned numerous accolades over their joint careers, including a Caldecott Medal and a nomination for the Hans Christian Andersen Award.
BUFFALO BILL made his name as a notorious "Indian hunter," though as he rose to fame as a showman, he advocated "for treaty rights and fair treatment of Native Americans" and is reported to have treated Native performers at his show "with dignity offstage" (THE BUFFALO NEWS). This work, published as the Western genre was on the rise in America, paints Bill's role as a colonizer in a positive light, while presenting a dehumanizing view of the Native Americans he encountered on the Great Plains and on stage.

Color pictorial endpapers of a map of the Great Plains. Illustrated in color and black and white. Unpaginated. Jacket with some edgewear and a couple of closed tears, a bit of chipping; some sunning to spine, with offsetting to reverse. Binding with light edgewear, a mild soil to rear joint. With a slight lean. Colors bright.
