"Welcome to the desert of the real." – Morpheus
Jean Baudrillard's increasingly relevant SIMULACRES ET SIMULATION explores concepts of hyperreality, the difference between true meaning and symbols, and the roles that the media and culture play in shaping our perception of reality. It is a startlingly prescient interrogation, written more than a decade before most people began spending more and more of their lives online.
Today however, Baudrillard's philosophical work is best know as a foundational influence on the Wachowski sisters and their iconic 1999 film, THE MATRIX. In early drafts of the screenplay, this association was made explicit; in scripts from 1996 and 1997, for example, Morpheus begins his expository speech with "As in Baudrillard's vision..." (Merrin, 4). And in the final film, a copy of the English translation, SIMULACRA AND SIMULATION, makes a cameo in an establishing scene, ironically used as a hollowed-out disguise for contraband software. Simulacra, indeed.
