WAY STATION is both a lovingly-rendered exploration of the possibilities brought about by an intergalactic stopover located on earth, and an anti-war novel penned when the nuclear fears of the Cold War were at their height. What steps would a single man be willing to take, Simak wonders, if he has access to alien anti-war measures that have as many benefits as they do side effects? The story was first published in two parts in the pages of the magazine GALAXY SCIENCE FICTION, which carried many of Simak's stories. "Its warmth, imaginative detail and finely rendered bucolic scenes make this probably [Simak's] best novel," note John Clute and Peter Nichols in THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SCIENCE FICTION (1109). WAY STATION earned Simak his first Hugo of five, including two Retro Hugos for earlier works, of which only eight have been presented over the award's history.
