"For too long, many have suffered and died without cause. I prefer to write about those who survived." – Virginia Hamilton
A turning point in her career – and in the history of African-American children's literature – this book was also the most difficult for Hamilton to write: "No book of mine was ever in more danger of being a failed labor of love" (Newbery Companion). Focused less on plot and more on atmosphere, its theme of resilience has been central to Hamilton's work. M.C. HIGGINS also won the National Book Award and the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award; it was the first book to win all three of these major awards (a feat that has been matched only once since, by Sachar's HOLES).
