Focused less on plot and more on atmosphere, its theme of resilience has been central to Hamilton's work. M.C. HIGGINS also won the National Book Award and the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award; it was the first book to win all three of these major awards (a feat that has been matched only once since, by Sachar's HOLES).
