Morrison's four-chapter history of African American artists in mid-twentieth-century Washington, DC: their work, the influence of institutions like the Howard University Art Department and the Barnett-Aden Gallery, and the changes over a thirty-year period when "just about every important artist in Washington and many national and international artists as well were affected by the events generated by Afro-American institutions in the city." Artists represented in the exhibition and in this catalogue include Gene Davis, Jacob Lawrence, Wifredo Lam, Lloyd McNeill, David C. Driskell, Raymond Saunders, and Elizabeth Catlett.
