Originally published as one of Pater's IMAGINARY PORTRAITS, the fictional Sebastian draws his philosophy from Spinoza and his aesthetic judgments from Pater's own. Konody's introduction offers brief recognition of the text's importance before rushing on to an ecstasy of frenzied adoration for the illustrator, to whom no superlative is equal: "Like Lindbergh upon his monoplane venturing alone across the Atlantic, Alastair has flown upon his pen the whole breadth of human emotions, and in so doing he has led the way that others may follow."
