First English-language edition of this invaluable study of Ernst's collage work.
Near fine in very good plus jacket.
"Max Ernst's collage oeuvre demanded that its foundations be laid bare and its aesthetic outlined, an aesthetic that uses, in a radically new way, the available world of mechanical reproduction."
Extensive monograph by Spies, a personal friend of the artist and the general editor of his multivolume catalogue raisonné. This American edition was published on the centenary of Ernst's birth and incorporates all additions and revisions of the third German edition, along with additional cross references and renumbered plates. Appendices include a number of previously unpublished texts and letters from Ernst to Tristan Tzara, as well as contemporary newspaper reviews and journal articles by and about the artist. Copiously and gorgeously illustrated.
New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc, 1991. 12.25'' x 10''. Translated from the German by John William Gabriel. Original black cloth with gilt-lettered spine. In original pictorial dust jacket. 540 pages. 847 illustrations, including 114 color plates. Some creasing and light wear to dust jacket, with small tear to lower edge.
