1968 edition of Summers' second major work on the Vampire, following the earlier and broader THE VAMPIRE: HIS KITH AND KIN. THE VAMPIRE IN EUROPE, sometimes reprinted as THE VAMPIRE IN LORE AND LEGEND, is, more precisely: The Vampire in Greece and Rome of Old; The Vampire in England and Ireland, and Some Latin Lands; Hungary and Czechoslovakia; Modern Greece; and Russia, Roumania and Bulgaria. Do not be deceived by the briefer chapter titles regarding Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Modern Greece, and the rest: there are vampires there too. This edition includes an introduction by Father Brocard Sewell, the author's friend and biographer, who notes the humming engine of genuine credulity powering Summers's admirable prose style: "Summers, of course, believes it all."
Summers, who believed it all, produced work after essential work on witchcraft, demonology, vampires, werewolves, and (not least) the literature of the supernatural and the Gothic. Despite such criticisms as may be made—Robert Hume's assessment of the GOTHIC BIBLIOGRAPHY as "flawed but useful" may be fairly applied to all his works—THE VAMPIRE IN EUROPE, with its predecessor, remains an invaluable vampirism resource and compendium of cross-cultural legend, literature, and history.
