BIOLOGICAL ANOMALIES: Birds
"Tinamous are grouse-sized, New World birds related to the ratites. Unlike the ratites, tinamous can fly, but they are very bad at it."
Catalogue of the bird mysteries, idiosyncratically organized by Corliss, who notes a great number of suspicious and scientifically unexplained bird traits and behaviors. (To list but a few: The Great Horned Owl grows magnificent ear tufts, "which have no obvious purpose." Female peregrine falcons are "noticeably larger than the males" and haven't responded to questions about it. Plovers often hop from one leg to the other. Is it a good time? Experts can't say.) Corliss, a successor to Charles Fort and a trained physicist who also wrote a number of educational works for NASA and the National Science Foundation, drew praise from Arthur C. Clarke for his scientific outlook–though "scientific" is here understood in relation to the methods of other Forteans, not other scientists. A useful and thorough reference work, more difficult to find than most in the series.
