Beautifully illustrated story of "A saintly rabbi who miraculously brings to life a clay giant that helps him watch over the Jews of sixteenth-century Prague."
First published in two colors in 1980 by Little, Brown as A LITTLE ALPHABET. Trina Schart Hyman, the NEW YORK TIMES notes, "illustrated an entire shelf of children's books and inspired many others who worked in the genre." Hyman illustrated over 150 books over her busy career, for which she earned a Caldecott Medal and three Caldecott Honors. In addition to her work for children's books, she served as an art director and staff artist for beloved children's magazine CRICKET from 1972-1979.
First edition. New York: Holiday House, (1996). 8.5'' x 5.75''. Original quarter blue cloth, red paper boards, title blind-stamped to front board, gilt-lettered spine. In original unclipped ($18.95) color pictorial dust jacket. Grey endpapers. Illustrated by Hyman in full- and half-page color illustrations. x, 96 pages. Signed by Hyman on half-title in black ink. Jacket with barely visible crease at spine ends. Book with light bumping to spine ends and top of board. Interior clean and sharp.
