First edition of du Maurier's vastly influential pre-Rebeccan Gothic, a stirring tale of Cornish menace and wicked uncles.
Near fine in very good plus jacket.
"He stood for everything she feared and hated and despised; but she knew she could love him."
"Try and break me if you like," Mary Yellan says to her brutal uncle Joss, shortly before he proposes, quite pleasantly, to break every bone in her body. The first of several sharp-edged du Maurier novels to be subsumed into the romantic canon, JAMAICA INN revels in unrestrained brutality, and gives its heroine all the strength and self-knowledge to resist it and survive. Like the later REBECCA, JAMAICA INN was adapted into a curiously inadequate film by Alfred Hitchcock, worsened by the interference of Charles Laughton; du Maurier hated it and so did most critics. Unlike the later REBECCA, the heroine of JAMAICA INN has an unbending backbone, "guts," a will to draw blood and a "demon of curiosity within her that would not be stilled." The novel's atmosphere of foggy, romantic, historical violence made it the template for innumerable imitators in the coming decades, but the sure style and the cruel psychological essentials have never been equaled.
