"Night after night she awakened, stiff with terror. Suppose this were all?"
Highly praised by contemporaries as a portrait of a modern American Madame Bovary, WILD CALENDAR was savagely adapted by Max Ophüls as CAUGHT (1949), a condemnation of a woman's imprisonment in marriage and "an intense corrective to the clichés of the American noir, particularly the perception of a woman as a predatory other who pulls all the strings" (Bowen).
