Before the Little Golden Books of midcentury fame, Philadelphia publisher David McKay came up with its own "Golden Books" series, gorgeously illustrated and printed on high quality paper, meant to last: "The binding is artistic and makes them especially appropriate for gifts, while its durability makes them excellent for the library," notes the rear panel of the scarce dust jacket. The list of titles in that series on the same panel also includes age ranges for target readers, such as "Tales From Shakespeare... Age 12 to 16." This edition of PINOCCHIO uses the famous illustrations of Charles Folkard, containing hints of Art Deco mixed with the fantasy of popular children's books of the era like the Oz series. A beautiful copy, quite difficult to find in such an intact dust jacket.

In original color pictorial dust jacket with same illustration on front panel. Green pictorial endpapers. Illustrated by Folkard with 8 full-page color plates and black-and-white images throughout. x, [2], 11-258 pages. Offsetting to endpapers, gilt border on front board somewhat tarnished, light bumping to corners. Jacket a moderate chips at spine ends (affecting title and publisher) and front panel (just touching text), light rubbing and a few short closed tears.
