Illustrated by Ivan Bilibin, translated by Rose Celli
Scarce early Père Castor picture book, a Russian fairy tale vividly illustrated by Russian émigré artist Ivan Bilibin.
Very good plus.

"Bilibin, a crucial figure in the Russian arts and crafts movement and the most Russian of Russian children's book illustrators." – Michael Patrick Hearn
Bilibin was a member of the circle that led the early 20th-century decorative arts rebirth in St. Petersburg, Mir iskusstva. He specialized in folk tales from his Russian heritage, even after emigrating to Paris in 1925. In researching his books, Bilibin "searched the countryside for rare costumes, architecture, and other decorative details to make his pictures for a series of Russian fairy tales as authentic as art history lessons" (Hearn).
