First edition of the second Mellops book, in which the family of French pigs search for buried treasure.
"[A]t the time they broke all the rules applied to children's books peopled with cushy teddy bears in an illusory world where everyone is nice, happy and stupid." – Ungerer, on the success of his children's books
Encouraged by Ursula Nordstrom at Harper (the same visionary editor who worked with Maurice Sendak), Ungerer created children's books with the theme that "no matter what one's flaws are, there is always a way to survive and win by being different and making the best out of what one has" (Ungerer). Another editor called him "cheeky, mischievous, joking all the time and so naughty. He never spoke down to children and would love to include words they'd have to look up" – a description that could equally be applied to Lewis Carroll or Lemony Snicket. In 1998, Ungerer was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Prize for children's literature.
