Pieck was one of the best-known Dutch illustrators of the 20th century, admired for his interpretations of fairy tales with a lush, nostalgic tone. This is one of two books on mythology that Pieck illustrated in his career. Technically appearing a generation after the works of the Golden Age of Illustration, this production is clearly harkening back to that ancestry, as well as the work 19th-century illustrators. An excellent gift book, much more stunning in hand than in digital reproductions.
