THE SALT HERRING
"To make all serious men mad, mad, mad,"
This poem was first composed in 1872 as "Le Hareng saur," an unusual example of French nonsense verse – a genre much more popular in England than in France. As Scott Bates notes, "if there is any one French poem that appears to fit the criteria of childishness, gratuitousness, and unconscious revolt characteristic of true nonsense, it is Charles Cros's 'Le Hareng saur."
