FROG WENT A-COURTIN'

The first recorded version of FROG WENT A-COURTIN' appeared in 1549; since then, as Langstaff notes in his introduction, "the ballad, or story, on down through all these hundreds of years, always changed a little bit as each new person tried to sing it." This version, with its vibrant illustrations and mid-century flair, added another iteration to the long lineage of the tale, largely based on Appalachian tellings. FROG WENT A-COURTIN' is a particularly rare Caldecott Medal title, especially in original dust jacket. A lovely copy.

First edition. New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, (1955). 11'' x 8.25''. Original blue boards. Original unclipped ($2.50) color pictorial dust jacket. Color pictorial endpapers of frogs, bugs, and other animals playing in a watering hole. Illustrated in color. [16] leaves. Jacket with light edgewear, a couple tiny chips to spine ends and one to center of spine; mild toning, more pronounced to spine. Binding with a touch of sunning to edges. Interior clean and bright.
