Although originally composed in 1842, this version was not published until 1851 by Cundall. It was the first fairy tale written by Doyle and is quite scarce in this early version, usually only found in the posthumous 1888 manuscript facsimile. Very scarce in the original cloth, especially in nice shape.
New edition. London: Griffith and Farran, 1858. 8'' x 5.75''. Original red cloth stamped in gilt and blind. Peach coated endpapers. Illustrated with 35 wood-engravings by G. and E. Dalziel after drawings by Richard Doyle, including eight full-page hand-colored plates (frontispiece, engraved title, and six further images). viii, 56 pages. Small loss (.25'' x 1.25'') to lower corner of front endpaper. A few stray pencil marks and some fingersoil to margins. Slight lean, with a touch of spotting and soil to boards.
