"So Daniel Boone grew lean and strong with his toes in the good black dirt, with the ring of the anvil in his ears, strong and sure-handed with tools and guns, and his head as clear and cool as the hillside spring above his cabin home."
Written by Daugherty and wonderfully illustrated by him with striking color lithographs throughout, this copy includes an original typed letter written to a fan. In it Daugherty warmly discusses the book, Daniel Boone, and his other books. Daugherty signatures and letters are not common.
First printing. New York: Viking, 1939. 10.75'' x 8''. Original publisher's brown cloth. In original price-clipped jacket with Newbery Award sticker to front panel. 96 pages. Jacket has two chips to front panel, a few tiny tape repairs to verso. Overall, clean and sound. The letter is loosely laid in and has old tape marks (likely from album) to edges. Daugherty has made several sloppy corrections and a few spelling errors in the text. 250 words in total approx.
