Greene's third book for children, and the first to be published with his name attached, is a vigorous attack on the cruel displacement of small neighborhood grocers with three cats and one pony by sterile corporations with too much money and no cats at all. The book was re-illustrated in 1974 by Edward Ardizzone; this scarce first edition features the remarkable and very different work of Dorothy Mary Glover, onetime theatre designer and prolific writer and illustrator under the names Dorothy Craigie and David Craigie. A beautiful copy.
