Nesbit's method of blending the realism of the natural world with bits of magic was an immense influence in the direction of 20th-century children's fantasy. FAIRIES, published early in her career, demonstrates that her talent at bringing together the mundane and magical was present from the start. This is a vibrant example, and rare among Nesbit's significant oeuvre.
