Nielsen's style in this book flirts with the border between Art Nouveau and Art Deco, with surprising yet captivating results. One of 500 numbered copies signed by Nielsen, this deluxe production contains 2 more color plates than the trade edition. Published when he was only 27, it was the Danish-born illustrator's first commission from an English publisher, leading to one of his most famous books the next year: EAST OF THE SUN, WEST OF THE MOON. A highlight of the Golden Age gift books, with the power to turn the heads of anyone interested in the era of Marie Antoinette.
(London): Hodder & Stoughton, [1913]. Folio, 12.5'' x 10.5''. Original full green vellum with extensive gilt decoration. Top edge gilt. Illustrated by Nielsen with 26 magnificent color plates with pictorial lettered tissue guards and decorative borders. 164 pages. Housed in custom tan cloth slipcase. A few marks and edgewear to vellum, as common in this edition; new ties, endpaper foxed as usual. Green still rich.
