Dark crime novel following Detective Sergeant Lloyd Hopkins as he pursues a quasi-Hannibal Lecteresque master manipulator with a god complex (that is to say, a psychiatrist) through the dark alleyways of the human psyche (that is to say, Los Angeles). Preceding his breakout 'LA Quartet' by a few years, the Hopkins trilogy consolidated Ellroy's cult following, though the author himself has never required the kind of critical acclaim he later received in order to believe in his own talents: "I am a master of fiction," he explained to THE NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE in one memorable interview; "I am also the greatest crime writer who ever lived. I am to the crime novel in specific what Tolstoy is to the Russian novel and what Beethoven is to music." How does he know? "I just know."
