"A magnetic story, ambitious in scope, with richly developed characters and beautiful evocations of landscape. Though set in an earlier time, it is contemporary in the profoundest sense, with resonance of A FAREWELL TO ARMS." – Willie Morris (dust jacket)
North Carolina native Charles Frazier based his narrative on the family stories surrounding his great-great uncle, a Confederate deserter from the small town of COLD MOUNTAIN.
The film adaptation, starring Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, and Renée Zellweger was nominated for seven Academy Awards, one of which Zellweger took home for Best Supporting Actress.
