The Federal Sugar Refining Co., run by the Spreckels family, built its refinery on the east bank of the Hudson River in 1901, reorganizing what was once the National Sugar Refinery; the same site would later be taken over by American Sugar Refining, and still operates under the ownership of Domino Sugar. Images document the building progress from April 16, 1909, to May 27, 1909, showing the site both empty and with men and horses at work.
