"It looks like men would've learned by this time that it don't pay to leave firearms laying around where their womenfolks can lay hold of them."
Caldwell's third and highly regarded collection of seventeen short stories, many of them set in the author's native Georgia and dealing with rural poverty, civil rights, and racial injustice; some light and comedic and some, like the title story, dark and violent. KNEEL TO THE RISING SUN was published just a few years after Caldwell's novels TOBACCO ROAD and GOD'S LITTLE ACRE, on whose greatness his reputation still rests. Though not noted in the book, a previous bookseller description of this copy records it as the copy of Thomas Guinzberg, president of The Viking Press, Caldwell's publisher.
First edition. New York: The Viking Press, 1935. 7.5'' x 5.25''. Original rust cloth with gilt lettering on black morocco labels. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Yellow silk ribbon marker.
